Give Your Kid Something to Do

Keeping everything locked up in your brain is a bad thing for a kid. You may want to express emotion with your kid and see how they are feeling by doing an activity together. This gives your kid an active role in the grieving process, and it’s something that therapists recommend.

These tips work for children of all ages:

  • Have each kid write a letter or draw something that is meaningful to them to bury with the deceased.
  • Ask each kid to pick a song, memory, poem, or book excerpt to read at the funeral or memorial, if they want to speak.
  • Give your kid something to hold onto that used to belong to the deceased, such as a favorite album, picture, glasses, or toy.
