Use Clear Wording and Be Direct

You shouldn’t beat around the bush when it comes to saying who died. While you don’t have to include all of the details, it’s important that you tell your kid you have difficult news in a kind, direct way. For example, you can say, “I have some sad news about your grandfather. He passed away today.” You may prefer to say “died” instead of passed if you feel that it’s more direct, but explaining what you mean is part of the talk that you’ll have with your children.
