Fever

The fever is usually the first concerning sign of influenza. This virus can cause extremely high fevers, especially in little ones.

A high temperature is not considered a fever. It has to be 100.4 degrees before it is official. You may notice that your kids seem flushed and sweaty. When you feel their head, they are much warmer than usual.

Most kids can handle a fever as long as they are taking in fluid. You can give them a fever relieving medication if they are uncomfortable or if their temperature rises above 104.0. A fever is the body’s attempt to kill viruses by raising the temperature too high for them.

There are some groups of people who need immediate medical help when they have a fever. Infants, especially newborns, should see a doctor as soon as possible. Kids who have other health problems may also need medical assistance.
