1. It Hinders Neuron Connections in Infants

A baby has one-hundred billion neurons at birth. Through face-to-face interaction, these neurons begin to form connections. According to Jeanne Williams, a child psychologist and play therapist, it’s the most powerful way humans learn. A parent’s reaction to their infant’s physical, verbal and emotional needs helps them understand, language, emotions, and the world around them. Williams calls it “serve and return” which works much like a game of tennis. The game can’t continue unless you return the serve promptly. Returning your baby’s smile does more than you can imagine. Reflecting their expressions back to them when they happen develops strong communication skills. Ironically, parents may be scrolling through their baby’s pictures deciding which ones to post on Instagram and miss some of these golden opportunities.
