Protecting Your Child From the Cold

It is very healthy for a child to be out playing in a variety of weather conditions. There are several ways that parents can protect their nature-loving little ones from even the coldest weather.

First, bundle your child in several layers of dry clothing. There are several materials that wick moisture away from the skin and dry quickly should the fabric get wet. These are great for cold weather layering.

Second, have children come to a warm place regularly to warm up a bit. This also gives you a chance to evaluate their fingers, cheeks, and other exposed areas for signs of frostnip.

Third, put a thick cream on cheeks, noses, and other skin that cannot be covered against the elements. This will prevent loss of heat and fluid. It also will cut down on chapping and wind damage.

Parents should watch weather reports and be aware of the conditions and forecast. This will allow you to dress your child appropriately and make alternate plans if the weather is simply too dangerous for a small child.

Winter is the perfect time to get out of the house and play in the snow. With the right knowledge, you can help your child to stay healthy in any weather.
