Infection or Allergy?

Although this illness is usually caused by a bacteria or virus, it is not always infectious. In some cases, it is caused by allergies. People who are allergic to pollen, dust mites, or animals may notice that their eyes are affected. In other cases, people develop these symptoms from being in an area with heavy pollution or swimming in a pool that is overly chlorinated.

Anything that causes irritation to the eyes can cause conjunctivitis. If your symptoms are not caused by a bacteria or a virus, the irritation is not contagious. It is important to get medical care quickly so the doctor can identify a cause and prescribed the appropriate treatment.
