8. If All Else Fails, Use a Cover Up

There are plenty of commercially available cover ups for breast feeding that will completely prevent exposure while you’re nursing in public. While you’ll be comfortable, don’t be certain baby will agree – practice wearing the cover up at home to see if they’ll tolerate it. Some babies can’t stand it, making it an untenable pick for mom even though it’s discreet.

Breastfeeding activists generally don’t prefer the use of cover ups, as they feel it conveys the message that there is something obscene, vulgar, inappropriate or sexual about nursing and that it needs to be kept private. You, however, are your own person. Your comfort isn’t a matter of opinion, and if a cover up is what allows you to breastfeed comfortably in public, do it. It’s about baby’s health, not anyone’s perceptions.
